Germany has the deepest street festival circuit in Europe and the widest range of pay models. At one end sit the Hutfestivals — Chemnitz, Suhl — where entry is free and the artist is paid by the hat. At the other sits the Kleines Fest family, small stages in park settings where artists are booked on a fee. In between are the city festivals, many of them run by tourist boards on public budgets. German programmes are also the most likely to cap the number of acts per discipline: more than one organiser has replied that they had already booked their two magic shows.

48 of the 49 festivals listed here accept applications directly — 9 through an online form and 39 by writing to the organisers. The rest build their programmes by invitation or through curators, which means the way in is to be seen at the festivals that do run calls.

Write in the local language wherever you can. It is a small circuit and a message in the organiser's own language reads as respect, not effort.
