The rule most artists learn late

European street festivals book far earlier than their dates suggest. A festival that happens in September may have closed its programme in the previous November. Writing in January, which feels early, is often two months too late.

If a festival matters to you, the safe window is the month after its previous edition ends — that is when the organiser is planning the next one and the slots are still empty.
